The Colombia 1¼ Centavo 1874 coin is a classic example of 19th-century Latin American numismatic art, reflecting the ideals of freedom and national identity during the early Republican period. Issued by the United States of Colombia, this fractional copper-nickel coin represents everyday circulation money from a formative era in Colombian history.
The obverse features a powerful national symbol: the Liberty Cap (Phrygian cap) mounted on a vertical staff, encircled by a beaded border. Across the cap is the inscription “LIBERTAD”, symbolizing freedom, republican values, and independence. Surrounding the central design is the legend “ESTADOS UNIDOS DE COLOMBIA”, with decorative star motifs placed along the lower rim, adding balance and visual rhythm to the composition.
The reverse displays the denomination “1¼ C” prominently at center, with the numeral “1” rendered in a tall, textured style. The surrounding legend “UN CENTAVO I CUARTO” clearly defines the value, while the date 1874 appears at the bottom. A dotted circular border and raised rim complete the structured, utilitarian design.
Struck in copper-nickel and preserved in Mint State 64 (MS64) condition by PCGS, this coin shows strong details, even wear-free surfaces, and appealing original toning. A desirable certified example of early Colombian coinage, ideal for collectors of Latin American history and classic world coins.
