The China Kirin 10 Cents silver coin dated 1898, issued during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor, represents an early and important stage of modern Chinese provincial coinage. Struck for circulation in Kirin Province, this piece reflects the Qing Dynasty’s efforts to introduce Western-style denominations while maintaining traditional imperial symbolism. The “10 Cents” value corresponds to the silver-based monetary system used in northeastern China at the end of the 19th century.
The obverse displays a finely engraved imperial Chinese dragon, shown coiled with a sinuous body, defined scales, sharp claws, flowing whiskers, and a fierce expression. At the center appears the flaming pearl, symbolizing wisdom, power, and cosmic authority. Surrounding the dragon are English legends, including the denomination “10 CENTS,” provincial identification, and a circular border of denticles. The reverse features Chinese characters arranged vertically, indicating the denomination and issuing authority, enclosed within a beaded circle. Additional decorative details, rim denticles, light toning, surface wear, and small contact marks confirm genuine circulation.
Struck in silver and certified by PCGS VF35, this coin is cataloged as LM-513 (RROV CANDAP variety). Its early date, provincial rarity, and classic dragon design make it a desirable example for collectors of Qing Dynasty silver, dragon coinage, and Chinese numismatic history.
