The silver 5-dollar coin issued for the Cook Islands depicts the famous archeological place of Ukraine called Tauric Chersonese. The ancient Greek settlement was discovered on the south shores of the Crimea. The original colony was established there in the VI century BC and left the numerous ruins of Greek houses, temples, towers and other building’s remains. The ruined city is was listed as the World Heritage place in 2013 and earlier as one of the unique wonders of Ukraine. The recognizable 1935 basilica’s columns and walls of Chersonese are placed on the reverse of the commemorative coin. There are words in Ukrainian at the top of the relief image meaning “12 Wonders of Ukraine”, and the words below are the name of the site in Ukrainian as well. The obverse of the coin is traditional with the effigy of the Commonwealth monarch and the name of the issuing country. The year of producing and the denomination of the piece are indicated there too.
