The Cook Islands 5 Dollars 2012 “Dmitri Mendeleev” silver coin honors the brilliant Russian chemist whose work transformed modern science. Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834–1907) is best known for creating the Periodic Table of Elements, organizing chemical elements by atomic weight and predicting the existence of yet-undiscovered elements — a breakthrough that shaped chemistry as we know it.
The reverse presents a powerful composition: Mendeleev is depicted seated at his desk, deeply focused as he writes with a quill pen in an open book. Behind him appears a stylized periodic table with element symbols such as H, Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, Al, Ti, Cu, Ge and others arranged in grid form. Scientific instruments, including laboratory glassware and a flask, are placed in the foreground. The inscription “D. I. Mendeleev” and the dates “1834–1907” are shown along the left, with the year 2012 below.
The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with crown, along with “ELIZABETH II,” “COOK ISLANDS,” and the denomination “5 DOLLARS.”
Struck in silver in flawless Proof quality, this coin is certified PCGS PR70, indicating a perfect grade. An exceptional collectible for enthusiasts of science, chemistry, and historically significant world coins.
