The collectible rectangular coin of the Cook Islands is dedicated to one of the greatly venerated Eastern Slavic local saints, Sergius of Radonezh. The 5-dollar piece was launched in 2010 as a part of the thematic Orthodox icons series. Saint Sergius was a monk and the establisher of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, he is also often called the Russia’s abbot. The saint is depicted on numerous icons and paintings of famous artists; one of the icons was the prototype for the design of the reverse side of the piece. The image is colored and decorated with gilded elements, similar to the precious embellishments of the icons. The name of the saint and the year of issue are indicated on the same surface as well. The obverse of the piece is quite traditional by its design with the effigy of the Queen and the legends explaining the name of the issuing state and the denomination of the coin.
