Burundi 5000 Francs, 2015, is a superb modern silver commemorative coin from the History of Aviation series, dedicated to the legendary Antonov AN-2, one of the most recognizable and durable aircraft in aviation history. Known for its rugged design and versatility, the AN-2 became an enduring symbol of utility aviation.
The reverse showcases a colored depiction of the Antonov AN-2 in flight, illustrated at a slight angle to emphasize its large biplane wings, radial engine, propeller, cockpit windows, landing gear, and tail section. The aircraft appears against a textured atmospheric background, enhancing the sense of motion. Below the plane is the inscription “ANTONOV AN-2”, while the lower arc reads “HISTORY OF AVIATION”, accompanied by a stylized aviation emblem combining wings and a propeller. A finely engraved circular border frames the entire scene.
The obverse features the coat of arms of the Republic of Burundi, centered within polished fields. The emblem includes a shield with a lion’s head, traditional elements, and a ribbon bearing the national motto “UNITE • TRAVAIL • PROGRÈS”. Surrounding inscriptions read “REPUBLIKA Y’UBURUNDI”, with the year 2015 positioned along the rim.
