The 1993 Bhutan 300 Ngultrum silver coin honors Maurice Ravel (1875–1937), one of the most influential French composers of the 20th century. Struck for the Kingdom of Bhutan, this commemorative issue celebrates Ravel’s legacy in classical music, including masterpieces such as Boléro and Daphnis et Chloé, works admired for their orchestral color and refined structure.
The obverse presents a finely sculpted portrait of Maurice Ravel in formal attire with bow tie, his thoughtful gaze directed forward. Behind him, horizontal musical staff lines create a rhythmic backdrop. Above and beside the portrait appear graceful figures: a ballerina in mid-dance pose with raised arm and a violinist performing, visually expressing movement and melody. The denomination is placed below, completing the balanced composition.
The reverse features an ornate Bhutanese emblem centered on a detailed cross motif, surrounded by intricate scrolling patterns. Two symmetrically positioned dragons encircle the design, their scaled bodies and curved tails forming a protective frame rich in traditional symbolism.
Struck in .925 silver in Proof quality and certified PCGS PR70, this 1993 issue stands out for its flawless surfaces and sharp relief. A superb acquisition for collectors of music-themed coins and high-grade world silver rarities.
