The British Virgin Islands Vitus Jonassen Bering Ship 2-coin silver set 2011 is a spectacular tribute to the great navigator who opened the North Pacific to Europe. Both Proof coins feature selective gilding and richly detailed maritime scenes. On the first reverse we see Bering’s expedition ship battling the waves, with full sails, rigging, flags and foaming water; above it a gilded rising sun and long rays break through stylised clouds, symbolising the discovery of new lands. The second reverse combines a finely modelled bust of Vitus Bering in period uniform with a three-masted ship on a rough sea and a gilded equestrian statue, evoking the imperial era of exploration.
The obverses show the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with ornate crown, curls and drapery, surrounded by the inscription BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS • QUEEN ELIZABETH II • 2011.
Struck in silver with Proof finish and gilded highlights, this low-mintage set vividly illustrates Bering’s voyages between Europe, Siberia and Alaska, making it a centrepiece for any collection devoted to ships, explorers and world discovery.
