The 2009 Great Britain 50 Pence silver coin “WSPU – Give Women the Vote” celebrates the centenary of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded in 1903 to campaign for women’s right to vote. The reverse, designed by Mary Milner Dickens, depicts a suffragette standing before the railings of the Houses of Parliament, holding a banner with the initials “WSPU”, and beside her a ballot box inscribed “GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE”. The years 1903–2003 mark a century since the movement’s establishment, and the denomination “50 PENCE” appears to the left. The obverse bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscription “ELIZABETH·II·D·G·REG·F·D·2009”. Struck in proof silver with deep cameo contrast, this coin honors the bravery and perseverance of the suffragettes who fought for equality and helped shape modern British democracy.
