The 1853 Brazil 500 Réis silver coin from the reign of Emperor Dom Pedro II is a splendid example of 19th-century imperial minting. The obverse features the magnificent coat of arms of the Brazilian Empire — a crowned shield containing a celestial sphere crossed by the Southern Cross constellation, encircled by stars representing the provinces. Laurel and coffee branches flank the emblem, symbols of victory and prosperity, while the Latin motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (“In this sign you will conquer”) arcs gracefully above. On the reverse, the denomination 500 appears at the center of a beautifully detailed wreath made of intertwined coffee and tobacco leaves, surrounded by the legend PETRUS II D. G. CONST. IMP. ET PERP. BRAS. DEF. and the year 1853 below. Struck in silver and graded AU58 by PCGS, this piece reflects the power and refinement of the Second Empire of Brazil — a timeless treasure of imperial heritage and classic design.
