Burundi 500 Francs, 1966, is a historically significant commemorative coin dedicated to the coronation of King Mwambutsa IV, marking an important milestone in the political and ceremonial life of the Kingdom of Burundi. This issue reflects the transition period of the country and preserves royal symbolism through refined numismatic design.
The obverse features a forward-facing portrait of King Mwambutsa IV, depicted with a calm, solemn expression and smooth sculptural modeling. The head is shown without crown, emphasizing dignity rather than regalia. Around the portrait runs the French legend “CINQUIÈME ANNIVERSAIRE DU RÈGNE • S.M. MWAMBUTSA IV”, carefully engraved along the rim and framed by a subtle raised border.
The reverse presents the royal coat of arms of Burundi, positioned centrally within a full laurel wreath. The shield displays a lion’s head, with crossed spears behind it symbolizing authority and defense. Above the emblem is the inscription “ROYAUME DU BURUNDI • COURONNEMENT”. The date “1 SEPT 1966” is split on both sides of the shield, while the denomination “500 F” appears below, accompanied by the motto “GANZA SABWA” on a ribbon.
Struck in billon with Prooflike finish, this coin is certified PCGS PL65, offering strong eye appeal and sharp relief. A compelling coronation issue for collectors of African monarchy and political history.
