Burundi 500 Francs, 1966, is a historically important medallic coin issued to commemorate the coronation of King Ntare V, a short but notable chapter in the monarchy of Burundi. This piece reflects a moment of political transition and royal ceremony during a turbulent period in the country’s history.
The obverse features a finely modeled left-facing portrait of King Ntare V, depicted with youthful facial features, short textured hair, and a composed, dignified expression. The portrait is surrounded by the inscription “SA MAJESTÉ LE ROI DU BURUNDI • NTARE V”, with small decorative symbols separating the text elements. The smooth mirrored field highlights the relief, giving the design a formal and ceremonial appearance.
The reverse displays the royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Burundi, centrally positioned and encircled by a full laurel wreath symbolizing honor and legitimacy. The shield bears a lion’s head, with crossed spears behind it, emphasizing authority and sovereignty. Above the emblem is the inscription “ROYAUME DU BURUNDI • COURONNEMENT”, while the date “1 SEPT 1966” is split on both sides of the shield. Below appears a ribbon with the motto “GANZA SABWA”, and the denomination “500 F” is placed beneath.
Struck in billon with Prooflike finish, this coin is certified PCGS PL66, offering strong reflectivity and crisp detail. A compelling coronation issue for collectors of African royal and political history.
