Burundi 500 Francs, 1966, is a medallic commemorative issue marking an important milestone of the reign of King Mwambutsa IV, one of the central figures in Burundi’s modern political history. Issued during a period of institutional transition, this coin reflects royal authority and national identity through formal symbolism.
The obverse features a forward-facing portrait of King Mwambutsa IV, modeled in a restrained and solemn style. The king is shown without regalia, with smooth facial contours, focused eyes, and a composed expression. Around the portrait runs the French inscription “CINQUIÈME ANNIVERSAIRE DU RÈGNE • S.M. MWAMBUTSA IV”, emphasizing the anniversary of his reign and reinforcing the commemorative purpose of the issue.
The reverse displays the royal coat of arms of Burundi, placed at the center within a full laurel wreath. The shield bears a lion’s head, symbolizing strength and sovereignty, while crossed spears behind the shield represent defense and authority. Above the emblem appears “ROYAUME DU BURUNDI • COURONNEMENT”, with the date “1 SEPT 1966” divided on either side. Below the shield is a ribbon inscribed “GANZA SABWA”, and the denomination “500 F” completes the design.
Struck in billon with Prooflike finish, this coin is certified NGC PL64, offering strong reflectivity and well-preserved details. A meaningful historical piece from Burundi’s royal era.
