A new coin.
The Bulgarian 10 Leva 1985 “Cosmonauts – Intercosmos” silver proof coin celebrates the international program Intercosmos, which united several socialist countries in peaceful space research. Graded PCGS PR63DCAM, the coin displays pronounced cameo contrast, enhancing its commemorative portraits and symbolic reverse.
The obverse features five sculpted busts of Soviet and Bulgarian cosmonauts, arranged in a structured composition. Their helmets, facial contours and name inscriptions — including Георги Иванов, А. Александров, И. Рюмин, В. Джанибеков, Жан IV Петеин — are precisely engraved. A full ring of stars borders the central portraits, while the lower inscription “КОСМОСЪТ – ЗА МИРНИ ЦЕЛИ” (“Space for Peaceful Purposes”) underscores the mission’s ideological message.
The reverse displays the emblem of the Intercosmos program: a circular insignia with a rising arrow-like trajectory cutting through the globe-themed outline, and the inscription ИНТЕРКОСМОС at its center. Surrounding it are НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ, the year 1985, the denomination 10 ЛЕВА, and a row of five stars symbolising cooperation within the bloc.
Struck in silver, this historically rich commemorative coin appeals to collectors of space exploration, Cold War–era collaborations, and Bulgarian numismatic heritage.
