The 1963 Bulgaria 2 Leva 1100th Anniversary of the Slavonic Alphabet silver proof coin honors the monumental cultural legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, creators of the first Slavic script. The obverse features both saints standing side by side, each holding symbolic attributes: Cyril with a manuscript scroll and Methodius with a gospel book. Their robes, halos and finely engraved folds emphasize their spiritual authority. The circular inscription “КИРИЛ И МЕТОДИЙ – СЛАВЯНСКА ПИСМЕНОСТ” and the dates 863–1963 mark eleven centuries since the birth of Slavic literacy.
The reverse reflects the era of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, with the denomination 2 ЛЕВА placed centrally above the national emblem of the time—an upright shield with a stylized lion. Laurel branches extend from both sides, symbolizing knowledge, enlightenment and cultural achievement. The surrounding legend “НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ” completes the design.
Struck in elegant proof quality and graded PCGS PR67, this coin displays sharp detail and well-preserved surfaces, making it a significant numismatic tribute to Slavic cultural heritage and Bulgarian national identity.
