The Bulgaria 5 Leva commemorative coin issued in 1982 is dedicated to Lyudmila Zhivkova and the international cultural initiative “Assembly – Banner of Peace,” a program closely associated with her name. This coin reflects Bulgaria’s emphasis on cultural dialogue, peace, and artistic exchange during the late period of the People’s Republic.
The obverse features a refined left-facing portrait of Lyudmila Zhivkova. Her hair is arranged in a neat bun, and the calm profile is rendered with soft, polished relief. Around the rim runs the inscription “ЛЮДМИЛА ЖИВКОВА,” while the upper part bears the words “АСАМБЛЕЯ • ЗНАМЕ НА МИРА,” referring to the international children’s assembly “Banner of Peace.” To the right of the portrait appear the dates “1942” and “1982,” marking her life span.
The reverse displays the emblem of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. A rampant lion is placed within a wreath of wheat ears and topped by a five-pointed star. Beneath the emblem is the mint year “1982.” The circular legend reads “НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ,” and the denomination is shown prominently as the numeral “5” above the word “ЛЕВА.”
Struck in copper-nickel with prooflike cameo surfaces, this coin is certified by PCGS as PR66 CAM. A meaningful collectible for those interested in Bulgarian cultural history, peace movements, and certified commemorative coinage.
