The Benin 200 Francs coin issued in 1999 celebrates the XXVII Olympic Games held in Sydney in 2000, one of the most memorable sporting events of the modern era. The obverse of the coin presents a dynamic rowing scene: two long racing boats with multiple athletes in synchronized motion glide across the water, capturing the spirit of teamwork, strength, and determination. Alongside the rowers stands a figure reminiscent of a classical statue, symbolizing the link between ancient Olympic tradition and its modern continuation. The inscriptions “XXVII OLYMPIADE” and “SYDNEY 2000” appear above, while the year of minting, “1999,” is engraved below. The reverse features the national coat of arms of Benin, divided into four heraldic quarters: a Somba castle, the Star of Benin, a palm tree, and a sailing ship. Two leopards serve as supporters, and the national motto “FRATERNITE – JUSTICE – TRAVAIL” is inscribed on a ribbon beneath, with the denomination “200 FRANCS CFA” placed at the bottom. Certified by PCGS in MS67, this CuNi coin is part of the Olympic Games commemorative series, making it an excellent choice for collectors of Olympic memorabilia, sports history, and numismatic rarities.
