The Benin 1000 Francs silver coin of 2019 is a magnificent tribute to Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the Russian scientist often called the father of astronautics, and to the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik. The obverse features a colored portrait of Tsiolkovsky seated against a cosmic background filled with stars and planets. Next to him appear engravings of rockets, an astronaut in open space, and the iconic Sputnik satellite orbiting Earth. The upper inscription in Russian “ПОКОРЕНИЕ КОСМОСА” translates as “Conquest of Space,” reflecting humanity’s greatest scientific achievement of the 20th century. The reverse presents the national coat of arms of Benin: a quartered shield showing the Somba castle, the Star of Benin, a palm tree, and a sailing ship, supported by two heraldic leopards with the national motto “FRATERNITE – JUSTICE – TRAVAIL” below. The denomination “1000 FRANCS CFA” is inscribed prominently. Certified by PCGS as PR69 Deep Cameo, this silver proof coin combines stunning artistry with historical depth, making it a highlight for collectors of space-themed numismatics.
