The Benin 1000 Francs “Romeo and Juliet” silver coin 2014 is a commemorative issue dedicated to William Shakespeare’s world-famous tragedy. Certified MS68 by PCGS, it is part of a numismatic series honoring great works of literature. The reverse of the coin presents a detailed and partly colored composition. In the foreground stands Juliet, shown in high relief with graceful features, her hand raised toward her chest as she gazes outward. Behind her, Romeo is depicted on a balcony, framed by classical stone architecture and climbing roses, with a full moon casting light over the romantic night scene. To the left, a framed portrait of Shakespeare is engraved in ornate decoration, emphasizing the literary theme. Around the rim runs the inscription “THE 450TH BIRTHDAY OF W. SHAKESPEARE – ROMEO AND JULIET”, together with the year 2014. The obverse bears the Coat of Arms of Benin, supported by two leopards, with a shield featuring a castle, a star with a cross, a palm tree, and a ship. The motto Fraternité – Justice – Travail and the denomination 1000 Francs CFA complete the design. Struck in silver with Prooflike quality, this coin combines art and culture, making it a notable piece for collectors of literature-themed issues.
