The Benin 1000 Francs 2004 “Gotthold Ephraim Lessing” silver coin pays tribute to one of the most influential figures of the German Enlightenment. Struck in Proof quality, it features on the reverse a finely engraved portrait of Lessing, depicted in 18th-century attire, with a wig and coat adorned by detailed buttons and braids. To the left appears a cartouche with the years 1729–1781, marking his birth and death, while the inscription “Gotthold Ephraim Lessing” encircles the upper part of the design. The date of issue, 2004, is engraved to the right. Lessing was a renowned philosopher, writer, and dramatist, remembered for his works “Nathan the Wise” and “Laocoön,” which continue to influence literature and aesthetics. The obverse presents the national coat of arms of Benin, supported by two heraldic leopards. The quartered shield contains a star, palm tree, fortress, and sailing ship, surmounted by buffalo horns. Below is the national motto “Fraternité – Justice – Travail” and the denomination 1000 Francs CFA. Crafted in sterling silver, this coin unites numismatic elegance with cultural significance, making it an excellent acquisition for collectors of literature-themed and commemorative issues.
