The 1974 Belize 1 Cent bronze coin, graded PCGS MS68 Matte, is a distinguished piece of early Belizean coinage. On the obverse is the detailed Coat of Arms of Belize, surrounded by a wreath of 25 leaves. At the top rises a mahogany tree, while the shield displays forestry tools and a sailing ship: one field shows a saw and axe, another an axe with paddle, and the base a ship under full sail. Two human supporters flank the shield — on the left a woodcutter with an axe, on the right a man holding a paddle — symbolizing the country’s history of timber and navigation. Beneath the shield, on a scroll, appears the motto “SUB UMBRA FLOREO” (“Under the Shade I Flourish”). Above, the legend “BELIZE” and below the date 1974 complete the design. The reverse depicts two birds in flight beneath the inscription “ONE CENT”, wings elegantly spread, enclosed by a dotted rim. Struck in bronze with a matte finish and preserved in MS68 quality by PCGS, this coin is among the finest known, making it a highlight for world coin and certified-coin collectors.
