A new coin.
The Belgian Congo Free State 10 Centimes copper coin of 1889 stands out as one of the most iconic colonial issues under King Leopold II. The obverse features a large five-pointed star pierced by a central hole, its rays extending outward in a radiant pattern. Around the main star are six smaller stars, balancing the design and enhancing the celestial symbolism. The denomination “10 CÉS” is clearly engraved above, while the date 1889 appears below with a mintmark. The reverse shows the crowned monogram of Leopold II: the Roman numeral “II” is repeated five times, each surmounted by a finely detailed crown, all arranged symmetrically around the central perforation. Encircling the design runs the inscription “LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES SOUV. DE L’ETAT INDEP. DU CONGO,” affirming Leopold II both as King of the Belgians and sovereign of the Independent State of Congo. Struck in copper and certified MS63 by PCGS, the coin preserves its intricate details and rich reddish-brown surfaces. A rare survivor in such high grade, it is highly sought after by collectors of colonial coinage, African numismatics, and 19th-century copper issues.
