The Belgium 5 Francs silver coin of 1873 is a remarkable piece from the reign of King Leopold II, catalogued as KM-24. The obverse presents a finely executed left-facing portrait of Leopold II, distinguished by his flowing beard and detailed hair, encircled by the legend “LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES.” The engraver’s name, Leopold Wiener, is discreetly placed beneath the bust. On the reverse, the crowned Belgian coat of arms dominates the design: the rampant lion within a shield, flanked by laurel and oak branches tied with a bow at the base. The national motto in French, “L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE” (“Unity Makes Strength”), crowns the composition, with the denomination “5 F” at the sides and the date “1873” below. This particular coin is noted as Position A, referring to the alignment of the dies, which adds a layer of numismatic specificity. Certified AU53 by PCGS, the coin retains sharp details and traces of original mint luster, making it a desirable 19th-century silver issue for advanced collectors.
