A new coin.
The Belgium 5 Francs silver coin of 1870 represents one of the early large-denomination issues of King Leopold II, Belgium’s second monarch. The obverse features a finely engraved portrait of Leopold II, depicted with a long beard and sharp profile, encircled by the inscription “LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES.” Below the bust is the signature of the engraver, Leopold Wiener. The reverse displays the crowned Belgian coat of arms: the rampant lion within a shield, supported by laurel and oak branches tied with a ribbon at the base. The national motto in French, “L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE” (“Unity Makes Strength”), arches above, while the denomination “5 F” is split to the sides of the shield and the date “1870” is shown below. Catalogued as KM-24, this piece is certified MS62 by PCGS, combining lustrous silver surfaces with sharp details. It is a tangible symbol of 19th-century Belgian identity, merging heraldic tradition with the authority of Leopold II’s reign.
