This striking 1916 German Empire iron medal, cataloged as Kienast-189, reflects the dramatic symbolism of World War I through an allegorical composition rooted in mythology and fate. Issued during the height of the conflict, the piece captures the era’s anxiety and belief in destiny, presenting a powerful visual narrative tied to war and inevitability.
The obverse features three female figures identified as the daughters of fate, standing in flowing classical garments. The central figure solemnly holds an infant in her arms, symbolizing life and destiny, while the figure on the left carries a torch, and the one on the right holds a serpent, both representing destruction and renewal. The inscription “NIKITAS SCHICKSALS TÖCHTER” encircles the scene, with the names “MILITZA – STANA – ELENA” engraved below and the date “1914,” linking the imagery to the outbreak of war.
On the reverse, a dramatic composition shows three intertwined serpents coiled around a horizontal sword, their heads raised in tension. The blade beneath them appears stained, emphasizing violence and sacrifice. Surrounding inscriptions read “DER SCHWARZEN BERGE NIEDERLAGE” and “WELT KRIEG 1916,” directly referencing the global conflict.
Struck in iron with a dark, austere finish, this UNC example graded by PCGS preserves sharp details and strong relief. A rare and evocative medal, it is an exceptional addition for collectors of WWI history, allegorical art, and German numismatics.
