This Barbados 10 Dollars silver coin, issued in 1983, celebrates the brown pelican, a distinctive seabird closely associated with the Caribbean island's coastal wildlife. The obverse features a magnificent pelican in flight, displaying enormous outstretched wings, individually engraved feathers, a long pointed bill, extended neck, streamlined body and trailing feet. The inscription TEN DOLLARS and a delicate beaded border complete the composition. The reverse presents the national coat of arms of Barbados, with a shield depicting a bearded fig tree and Pride of Barbados flowers, supported by a dolphin and pelican. Above appears a helmet, decorative mantling and a raised hand holding crossed sugar canes, while the ribbon bears the motto PRIDE AND INDUSTRY. The date 1983 and BARBADOS inscription surround the design. Struck in silver with a Proof finish, this KM-36a coin is certified PCGS PR70. A superb collectible for enthusiasts of Caribbean wildlife, birds and world numismatics.
