The Bailiwick of Jersey £5 silver proof coin, issued in 2010, is dedicated to Sir Thomas Fairfax (1612–1671), a distinguished military leader of the English Civil War. The obverse presents the refined portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the surrounding inscription ELIZABETH II BAILIWICK OF JERSEY 2010. The reverse features a detailed bust of Sir Thomas Fairfax, depicted with long hair, moustache, and clad in 17th-century armor and cloak, embodying his role as commander of the Parliamentarian “New Model Army.” The legend REVOLUTION TO RESTORATION arcs across the upper field, with his name SIR THOMAS FAIRFAX along the sides, and the denomination 5 POUNDS below. Known as the “Black Tom,” Fairfax was a key strategist who secured decisive victories at Naseby and elsewhere, helping to shift the balance of power in England. His leadership was pivotal to the Parliamentarian cause, though he later resisted Cromwell’s harsher measures, illustrating his sense of principle. Struck in silver to proof deep cameo quality, this coin is graded PCGS PR69DCAM, confirming its sharp strike and mirrorlike contrast. A superb collectible linking numismatic art with one of Britain’s most important historic eras.
