The Australia 1 Dollar 2002 “Melbourne Mint” silver coin is a refined commemorative issue celebrating 130 years of the historic Melbourne Mint (1872–2002). Struck in silver with elegant gilded elements and graded PR70 by PCGS, this coin combines national heritage with outstanding proof craftsmanship.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the royal diadem and earrings, surrounded by the inscription “ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2002” and the designer’s initials IRB below the neckline. The reverse presents a detailed façade of the Melbourne Mint building with its classical columns, pediment and central doorway. Above appears “MELBOURNE MINT,” with the dates 1872 and 2002 on either side. Two inset gilded medallions enhance the design: one shows a crowned shield within a wreath and the Latin inscription “VICTORIA REGINA,” while the other depicts St George on horseback slaying the dragon, dated 1872. The denomination ONE DOLLAR is placed along the lower rim.
Issued in proof quality silver and preserved in perfect PR70 condition by PCGS, this coin is a striking tribute to Australia’s numismatic history and an exceptional addition to any advanced collection.
