The Australia 1 Dollar World War II Rats of Tobruk silver coin 2016 was issued by the Perth Mint to commemorate the 75th anniversary of one of the most legendary chapters of WWII. Struck in .999 fine silver, it honors the Australian soldiers who defended the Libyan port of Tobruk in 1941, earning the nickname “Rats of Tobruk” for their resilience under siege. The reverse presents two soldiers in helmets inside a trench, observing the battlefield where explosions rise dramatically in the background. Around the edge are inscriptions: 75th ANNIVERSARY OF WWII and THE RATS OF TOBRUK. The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark is placed on the left side.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, encircled by inscriptions: ELIZABETH II – AUSTRALIA – 1 DOLLAR – 2016.
Certified PR69DCAM by PCGS, this coin is nearly perfect, with mirror-like fields and frosted reliefs highlighting the wartime design. Its strong historical theme, limited mintage, and military symbolism make it a must-have collectible for both numismatists and history enthusiasts.
