Armenia’s 2006 100 Dram Hovhannes Aivazovsky KM-129 is an exceptional rectangular silver .925 commemorative dedicated to the celebrated Armenian-born marine painter Hovhannes Aivazovsky (1817–1900). Issued within the international “Painters of the World” program, the coin combines fine relief with striking colored maritime imagery. The obverse features Armenia’s national coat of arms with eagle, lion and shield beside a dramatic fragment of Aivazovsky’s “Sinking Ship,” showing a sailing vessel struggling amid blue-green storm waves, together with the year and denomination. The reverse presents Aivazovsky’s detailed portrait beside a fragment of “The Battle of Chesme,” with sailing warships, masts, rigging, sails, sea and distant vessels. Aivazovsky became internationally renowned for luminous seascapes and produced thousands of works during his career. Minted by the Mint of Poland in BU quality, this distinctive issue had a limited mintage of up to 5,000 pieces and won recognition for its original minting technology. A superb choice for collectors of Armenian coins, maritime art, painters and ships.
