The Albania 5 Leke 1968 silver coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the historic League of Lezha, a pivotal political and military alliance formed under Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg to unite Albanian principalities against Ottoman expansion. This Proof issue, graded PR65 PCGS, offers exceptional mirrorlike fields and sharply rendered reliefs.
The obverse features a striking emblem: a central shield bearing the Albanian double-headed eagle, placed before a radiant fan of crossed swords. Above the shield appears Skanderbeg’s distinctive horned helmet, while the inscriptions “SHQIPËRI – ALBANIA” and “1444–1968” highlight the anniversary. At the bottom, the bilingual phrase “LIDHJA E LEZHËS – LIGA LISSI” reinforces the coin’s commemorative theme. Each sword, hilt, and decorative border dot is rendered with remarkable precision.
The reverse displays the national emblem — a double-headed eagle framed by wheat branches and a ribbon inscribed “24 MAJ 1944”. Surrounding stars form a complete circle around the design, above the denomination 5 LEKË placed at the bottom. The combination of heraldic elements and historical symbolism makes this silver issue an important tribute to Albania’s early unity and resistance.
A sought-after commemorative Proof coin, it is an excellent addition for collectors of Albanian history and certified world silver.
