This Afghanistan 500 Afghanis silver coin, issued in 1998, commemorates the XXVII Summer Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and celebrates javelin throwing, one of athletics’ classic field events. Struck in .999 silver as a non-circulating commemorative, KM-1033 features an eye-catching coloured sports design and a Proof finish. The reverse depicts a male javelin thrower captured at the moment of his powerful approach and release, wearing a red athletic top, blue shorts and yellow shoes. The athlete and long javelin appear above a stylized green and brown stadium field, accompanied by “SYDNEY 2000,” “XXVII OLYMPIAD,” and the date 1998. The obverse presents Afghanistan’s national emblem with a mosque, minarets, wreath, ribbon and crossed elements, surrounded by the country name and the 500 Afghanis denomination. With a reported mintage of only 5,000 pieces, this colourful Olympic issue combines sport, national symbolism and scarce world silver coinage, making it an appealing addition to an Olympic or athletics collection.
