The Afghanistan 500 Afghanis 1996 silver coin was issued to mark the FAO World Food Summit in Rome, held from November 13–17, 1996. This global event brought together leaders and organizations to address the challenge of eradicating hunger, making the coin a significant historical and humanitarian commemorative issue.
The obverse features the Zafar Gate in Paghman Valley, a monumental symbol of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage, surrounded by scenic mountains and trees. The finely detailed design highlights architectural elements with a double-columned arch, a triumphal gate, and stone terraces. Above appears the official FAO emblem with laurel wreath, globe, and the year 1996, alongside the inscription “WORLD FOOD SUMMIT – ROME 13–17 NOV.” At the lower edge, the name “ZAFAR GATE IN PAGHMAN VALLEY” is engraved.
On the reverse, the coat of arms of the Islamic State of Afghanistan is depicted, with mosque and archway, flags, wheat wreath, and inscriptions in Arabic. Below is the denomination 500 Afghanis.
Struck in silver with a Proof finish, this coin combines cultural pride with a message of international solidarity against hunger. It is a rare collectible that bridges Afghan history with a universal humanitarian cause.
