Andorra, 10 dinars, Holy Helpers, St. Catherine, silver Proof coin, 2010

The commemorative coin of Andorra depicts the Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The 10-dinar silver piece was minted in 2010 as a part of the series dedicated to the 14 Holy Helpers of Catholic Church. The mentioned saint lived in 4th century and died as a martyr on a “breaking wheel”, which is often called “Catherine wheel” since then. The spiked wheel is shown behind the effigy of St. Catherine on the coin’s reverse, as it usually is on the images of the martyr. Saint Catherine is depicted sitting and holding her other attribute, a sword. The picture is surrounded with the intricate border with the name of the saint in Catalan above the image. The obverse of the coin is quite traditional for Andorra’s specials. It bears the Coat of Arms of the Principality, the denomination and the name of the country. The year of mintage is indicated below.
